Position Description: Senior Attorney, Administrative Law
Location: Remote, with a preference for the Washington, DC, area
Status: Full Time; Exempt
Position Summary
The Center for Applied Environmental Law and Policy (CAELP) is seeking a Senior Attorney to develop and implement creative responses to anti-regulatory judicial doctrines. This position will help CAELP’s team of attorneys respond to challenges to climate and public health protections while also pursuing a long-term legal strategy to protect the core principles of modern administrative law. The Senior Attorney will work closely with CAELP colleagues to support innovation and progress on critical questions of law and policy, engage with legal scholars and other public and private sector attorneys to help coordinate strategy across multiple advocacy issues, and translate innovative strategies into legal briefs and white papers.Essential Responsibilities and Tasks
Work with CAELP colleagues to develop and implement strategies to influence the trajectory of administrative and constitutional law doctrines that impact environmental law and other public health issues
Engage with environmental organizations, other advocacy organizations, legal scholars, and government officials to develop alternatives to anti-regulatory judicial doctrines and translate those approaches into effective litigation strategies
Build coalitions that include nonprofit, government, academic, and industry partners
Incorporate long-term strategy goals into legal briefs, white papers, and academic articles
Support CAELP’s efforts to promote and defend strong regulatory standards in the federal rulemaking process and litigation, including conducting legal and factual research and contributing to rulemaking comments
Review and provide feedback on reports, memoranda, and other materials developed by partners and stakeholders
Organize and lead meetings/calls of partners and stakeholders to support development of regulatory, litigation, and communications strategies
Work with colleagues to meet urgent needs related to other CAELP priorities when necessary
Required Education, Experience, Knowledge, and Skills
Ten or more years of legal or public policy experience
Law degree from a U.S. law school
Demonstrated knowledge of environmental, energy, or administrative law
Litigation experience
Strong research skills
Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Ability to engage with highly-complex legal and policy questions
Strong interpersonal and collaboration skills

Salary and Benefits
We offer competitive salaries, benefits, and a supportive working environment. The starting salary range for this position is $165,000-$180,000, commensurate with experience. At this time, our benefits include full medical, dental, and vision insurance, including a health reimbursement account; short and long‐term disability and life insurance; participation in our retirement plan and flexible spending accounts; and vacation and personal leave. All benefits may change from time to time at the discretion of the organization.
